I was struggling with my addiction, train rides back to Indiana were always brutal because I’d be going through withdrawal so my parents wouldn’t discover my problem. I’m a fighter though, and I wasn’t going to let that stop me from capturing the liminal spaces within the train, just as we were leaving Chicago the entire sky turned a purple I hadn’t seen before I a sky. As we passed through the near south side I captured this moment. It’s means so much to me because I was one of the first times I stood up to my addiction and said “I’m not doing this anymore, I can handle this with my camera” and I’ve been able to push through with that mentality. I’m posting this piece to celebrate 100+ days of clean time from opiates, and to celebrate the drug free future that I am working so hard to accomplish.

A series created based on my experience hiding my mental illness and drug addiction, the balloons represent the facade I carry with me everywhere I go. Making this series has been an awakening for me that being my true self as an artist is the only way to truly be successful in this space, and that the facade will just bring me down. This series inspired me to be me, even if that’s not always a smiley face
