About the Artist:

Vivian Wenhuey Chen

Born in Taiwan, Vivian Wenhuey Chen came to the United States to study law and lived in Boston, Massachusetts for more than 30 years. During those years, she worked as a lawyer and a banker, but always worked on her artworks whenever she could find time. While mostly self taught aside from the art classes in high school, she also attended art classes at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a joint program with Tufts University, and California State University Long Beach Art Department. She was also very active in art related activities, served as trustee of the Peabody Museum of Salem (now Peabody and Essex Museum) in Salem, Massachusetts from 1985 to 1994, co-founded the New England Chinese American Fine Arts Society in Boston and was its vice president and sat on its board from 1994 to 2005. In 2005 she moved to and settled in Long Beach, California. In addition to continuing her art career, she was also getting involved in many art organizations. Currently, she is a member of LagunaART.com Gallery, South Bay Contemporary Art, and Southern California Women’s Caucus of Art .

She has exhibited in LagunaART.comGallery, Orange County Center of the Contemporary Art, SoLA Art Gallery, Long Beach Library, “A Lot” sponsored by Arts Council of Long Beach, Long Beach Cultural Alliance, Torrance Art Museum, Nevada Museum of Fine Arts, Florence Biennuale, Florence, Italy, Salon des Artists Independants, Paris, France, and Werby Gallery and Gatov Gallery, both at CSULB, South Bay Contemporary, CA 101, Long Beach Open Studio Tour, Utopia Good Food and Fine Art, C Gallery on the Broadway, Long Beach, the gallery at University of Southern California and several exhibit with Southern California Women’s Caucus in addition to exhibits in many other artists organizations.

Description:

Inspired by the philosophy of Daoism, I ponder it's wisdom while writing its script in Chinese repeatedly until I reach a meditative state. The color of the paint manifests depending on my mood at the time. As each piece is executed, the layers of color reveal themselves.

Daodejing 3, The way the sage regards himself The reason why heaven and earth endure thus long is because they do not live of, or for, themselves.
