Gingerbread House, 2021 Artist: Adrienne Reid Medium: Non-Fungible Token Dimensions: 15 Megabytes Minted on: OpenSea No. 7, Series “Interpretations of Gingerbread”

Artist’s Statement: After many years of working exclusively in 3D gingerbread construction, I am now in my seventh year of my series entitled “Interpretations of Gingerbread.” Each year, I explore the concept of a gingerbread house as expressed through a different medium of art and using only 100% edible materials. This year, I created my gingerbread house through the interpretation of the medium “Non-Fungible Token” (NFT). The digital image of my NFT is a sugar-glass gingerbread house completely filled with Nerds candy. The Nerds represent unique nodes of digital data. The NFT itself is the red highlighted row of Nerds on the Nerd blockchain. Each row of Nerds represents one NFT with a sequence comprised of: the preceding NFT’s hash (first six Nerds in the row), the NFT’s transaction data (ten single color Nerds), and the new hash (last six Nerds in the row). The Nerds are lined up sequentially so that each NFT line is connected with the preceding and subsequent rows in an accurate Nerd color sequence. Nerd rope (representing a string of data) “points” to the digital asset – the NFT gingerbread house – which is stored in the cloud (specifically the Interplanetary File System – IPFS). The NFT’s digital asset is a Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), represented by physically being moved back and forth using Nerd ropes. The NFT Gingerbread House has been minted on the Ethereum blockchain, with a royalty built into the contract, for the benefit of the Moody Center for the Arts, Houston, TX. All future proceeds from the sale and resale of this NFT will be donated to the Moody Center for the Arts. The NFT is not insured, the physical Nerd house has been eaten, the Nerd Blockchain will remain in perpetuity.
