In this nude self-portrait, Egon Schiele depicts himself in a crouching posture, which he additionally tectonizes through the geometric conception of the vertically placed thighs and the bent arms mirroring each other. The internal drawing of his entire body is markedly differentiated, muscle parts and body hair are indicated with short strokes, ripples and soft shading. The decorative and reductionist elegance of the line drawing of many drawings created during this period is deliberately avoided here; instead, the body is colorized, as it were, with the monochrome means of black chalk.
