[About Visual Art] ​ 'Gene' is an audiovisual media work by Joy Jo, an abstract expressionist artist who loves experimental music, and JSKM, a jazz guitarist. When she visited JSKM's concert and she heard 'Gene', images of the expanding universe and the deep sea came to her mind. These images became the floating bubbles and golden water that explode on the screen while the generative music flows. ​

[About Music] ​ ‘Gene’ is a guitar improvisation that incorporates generative elements. Zoia, the modular synth is programmed to play the C major scale in a random order with irregular 8th notes, over which a guitar improvisation was recorded. After a given point, a push on the control button on the zoia caused pitch changes and the tonal center to suddenly disappear. With certain rules on zoia, it generates diverse musical combinations which are then layered with the "human" generative output: guitar improvisation.
