'O wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't.' — William Shakespeare, The Tempest, Act V, Scene I, ll. 203–206.

This is an animated video version of an illustration I made in 2011 called 'Playing with Code Fire' relating to dna modification, growth, our connection with nature/environment/change and scientific 'progress' in general. We now have the technology of Cas9 / Crispr. The issues surrounding the potential of gene-editing is now even more relevant (and scary.) Genetic mutation can be a response to environmental conditions. By editing out mutation we may in fact be denying ourselves subtle traits. As Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' highlighted, we must be so careful how we shape the future and try to influence nature. It has always been influencing us.
