Fungi are heterotrophic which means they can't make their own food. Instead they are either saprobic (decomposters), parasitic (take energy from other living organisms) or mutualistic (provide mutual benefit to their host).

Only about 148 thousand species of fungi out out of millions have been described by taxonomists. Identification is tricky because many look similar and their appearance can change significantly over their sometimes short lives of only a few days.

Fungi are beguiling. Some are edible and those containing psilocybin are hallucinogenic. Others that are toxic can cause permanent brain injury or death. With the difficulty of identification, how do you tell them apart?
