Night at the Opera

A new take on songwriting where the piece moves of famous historical chess games dictate the bass notes of a song. The song in turn tells the pieces when to move. This collection of videos illustrates the marriage of chess game and song.

Songwriter Mick Flannery, " During covid lockdowns I was reacquainted with my love of chess, owing to Agadmator's youtube channel. At the time I was also trying to write songs and was searching around for new chord sequences. I noticed that there are 6 different chess pieces on the board and that most songs use around this number of different chords. I decided to pick my favourite chess games and let them code the sequence of chords for a song. Each song has different chords assigned to each piece as I had to find patterns that worked. I'm very grateful to everyone who worked on these accompanying videos, where you can see the pieces dance along in time with the song, each ringing out their assigned note as the move. Hope you enjoy. Mick.
