The Social Network Social Distancing series started in March 2020 at the very beginning of the pandemic. I put out an open call to my friends and followers on Instagram asking them to share a selfie, in exchange I’d retouch it for them using multiple beauty apps on my iPhone. The intention of the exchange was to create an intimate digital experience during a point in time where we had to distance socially.
Creating imagery using beauty apps has been a part of my practice since 2016, the works are molded by my fascination with the limited functionality of the app which is to enhance a user’s image, revealing societal beauty standards in its programming. The series pushes these apps beyond their initial intent to varied forms of abstraction and sometimes obliteration.
