I Invented The Selfie

The “Me and a Celebrity” photograph has long been a tradition in Hollywood, and I had the opportunity to make quite a collection at Coachella 2003 when I was given a photo pass. These pictures were taken four years before the first iPhone, three months before myspace.com was launched, one year before facebook.com, and ten years before the word, “selfie” was added to the Oxford dictionary.

I took two cameras to Coachella. I’d recently made the switch to digital, with a Sony F-707 and a Casio Exilim EX-S2. The Sony was 5 megapixels (respectable at the time); the Casio was just 2 megapixels but fit snugly in my pocket. The Sony had a twisting back, so I could hold it above my head in the pit, using it like a half-periscope. The Casio was always ready for action in my pocket, allowing me to take a style of photograph nobody there had seen before - the selfie. Of course I never called them that; the term selfie came much later. I called them my, ‘Me And’ pictures.
