Art Blocks is a digital platform where generative artists publish unique artworks using creative code. With historical roots in conceptual art, today generative art typically entails the creation of an algorithm using computer code, with randomness introduced into the artist’s algorithm to produce the unique artworks. When a collector purchases a work, they trigger the creation of a never-before-seen iteration of the artist’s project in the form of an NFT artwork.
Art Blocks projects are categorized according to three different types: Curated, Playground, and Factory.
Curated projects are handpicked by a committee and “push the boundaries of Generative Art in their technical innovation and aesthetic beauty.”
Playground projects can be thought of as spin-off projects, created by artists already included in the curated collection who would like to experiment without awaiting further approval to the curated set.
Factory projects are created by artists yet to be admitted by the curators, but still meet a more relaxed set of requirements.
Established in February 2021, the Playground provided a space for previously curated artists to experiment and innovate further in generative art. Encouraging creative freedom and experimentation, the Playground allowed curated artists to explore new styles and concepts more independently. This collection was closed in October 2022 alongside the Factory collection, with the debut of the Presents collection. Explore Playground
Launched in March 2021, Art Blocks Factory provided a more streamlined platform for artists to deploy generative art projects. This collection allowed for greater autonomy and a broader range of creative expression, enabling artists to experiment with different styles and release mechanics. The Factory was officially closed in October 2022 alongside the Playground collection, with the debut of the Presents collection. Explore Factory
Established in November 2022 as a successor to the Playground and Factory collections, Art Blocks Presents featured generative art projects that were selected by the Art Blocks team and complemented the Curated collection. The Presents collection embodied our ongoing standards for artistic creativity, conceptual rigor, and technical achievement. Explore Presents
Launched with our Friendship Bracelets project in advance of Marfa Weekend in November 2022, the Explorations collection establishes a space for experimental, community-focused releases. Consisting of commissioned projects that embody the spirit of innovation and experimentation within the Art Blocks ecosystem, this collection embraces new approaches that are conceptualized and realized in collaboration with the Art Blocks team. Explore Explorations
Launched in June 2022 with our debut partner Pace Gallery, the Collaborations channel includes co-branded releases that combine the mission of Art Blocks with the unique visions of select partners. These collections represent true collaborations between Art Blocks and our partners to shape the program offerings and extend the global reach of generative art. Explore Collaborations
