AI often generates mysterious images that we do not expect, perhaps due to its overly pure perception of the world, with a powerful reality derived from the history of humanity. These images sometimes shake our common sense and stereotypes.
From their present perspective, the discomfort we feel with the hands they render is nothing more than an insignificant error, and they are nothing more than hands to them, including their alien results. This result may be from the exclusion of the functionality of the described object from their current perception.
Alien results such as hands also occur frequently in the Chinese characters they generate. It is infrequent for them to generate strings of characters that have meaning in the present, and they generally generate mysterious symbols that are meaningless but have the regularity of Chinese characters. In the same way that a hand without functionality is drawn as something that looks like that, letters are “written" as symbols of regular dots and lines, devoid of meaning. It also appears to expose that the Chinese characters we use accidentally give meaning to the current form.
This project explores the aesthetic between calligraphy and illustration by drawing AI-generated letter-like symbols (tentatively called "AI Kanji") in the calligraphic manner they mimic. Even though we know they are meaningless symbols, the "AI Kanji" makes us feel as if we are looking at a language from another world and even feel a kind of exoticism. The unique emotion created by "AI Kanji" will push our aesthetic senses to the boundary between writing and drawing, and its spread will also create a new world in the present age.
