Stop AAPI Hate: Daz 3D, the Diigitals and a Groundbreaking NFT

Guest Post by Preston Woo, Chief Strategy Officer of Daz 3D and Tafi

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Daz 3D has once again teamed up with The Diigitals, a leading all-digital modelling agency, building on their past collaboration in support of Black Girls Code earlier this year. This time, the team is releasing a ground-breaking and innovative

NFT designed to showcase the Asian-American Pacific islander experience. All proceeds from the NFT sales will be donated to non-profit Stop AAPI Hate. The non-profit Stop AAPI Hate operates the Stop AAPI Hate reporting center, which tracks incidents of hate and discrimination against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. In addition to the NFT drop, Daz 3D will be releasing exclusive 3D content on their own marketplace, and will also be donating proceeds from the sale of those assets as well.

Now is the time to rally behind the Asian Community

There is no better time than now to stand up for inclusivity, diversity, and love for all communities. May is a special month for the AAPI community, making it the perfect time to raise awareness about serious issues that trouble Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country and the world.

Just a few months ago, NBC News released alarming data showing that Anti-Asian hate had nearly doubled in March of 2021. The types of hate-crimes being committed daily, including acts of violence, racism, and even hateful rhetoric toward Asian-Americans that has saturated the US throughout the COVID-19 pandemic especially is cause enough for action. Many voices are using their platform and reach to advocate for more love and change.

Coming Together to Make an Innovative NFT

This project is meaningful for a lot of people, both on and off the team who created it. This NFT simply wouldn’t have been possible without the collaborative effort of a number of professionals and passionate creators, making this NFT the perfect fusion of culture, art, and technology with a powerful purpose.

The NFT is a combination of contributions by Cameron James-Wilson, CEO of the Diigitals and creator of virtual idol Joon Yung, Preston Woo and the team at Tafi and Daz 3D, and Braeden Duperron, fourteen-year-old violinist.

When we asked Braeden why he contributed to this NFT by playing the violin for the soundtrack, he said: “I was so excited to play the violin for a project that would help other people like me with all the money going to Stop AAPI Hate. I hope this inspires people to treat others better . . . I’m excited to joinwith Stop AAPI Hate to spread awareness of the racism experienced by Asian peoples throughout North America and the world.” Braeden goes on to explain his own experiences as someone of AAPI heritage saying, “Looking different—I’m of mixed heritage—Japanese, Hawaiian, and Filipino—when people meet my white mom, they think I must be adopted and have even asked where my mom got me. I don’t let it bother me and keep doing what I love—playing the violin. I hope everyone enjoys my performance.”

The NFT features the original digital character Joon Yung, or J-Yung, created by The Diigitals. “Bringing together art and technology to benefit such an amazing initiative and stand against anti-Asian hate was an easy decision for us at the Diigitals,” Cameron said. “As an artist who is heavily inspired by Korean culture, I cannot be silent on the rising issue of anti-Asian hate across the world.”

In the NFT, J-Yung’s outfit was designed exclusively for the launch by digital artist and fashion designer Jin3D, a proud Korean artist. “The increase in anti-Asian sentiment across the country is very troubling and disturbing,” said Jin3D. “A natural reaction in the Asian-American community has been to hide our Asian identities and cultures for fear of being targeted for verbal or physical attacks. Turning to digital art and digital fashion has allowed me to express myself while keeping true to me Asian identity. I am honored to use my skills in support of AAPI month.”

Preston Woo, Chief Strategy Officer of Daz 3D and Tafi, leaders in 3D digital art, said, “With all proceeds going to Stop AAPI Hate, this NFT drop is deeply personal to me. I’m proud of Daz 3D and our collaboration with The Diigitals and OpenSea in support of this important, relevant cause.

With all proceeds going to Stop AAPI Hate, this NFT drop is deeply personal to me. I’m proud of Daz 3D and our collaboration with The Diigitals and OpenSea in support of this important, relevant cause.

The journey of a never-seen-before photograph of Andy Warhol

Guest Post by TRiPTYCH & Steven Reiss

Between 1979-1984, the New York City art scene was in full swing, though the City itself had fallen into disrepair. Mayor Ed Koch struggled while the discos raged on. Against all odds, Soho and the Lower East Side were ablaze with creative souls trying to make an impact.

new york

I traveled back and forth to the City several times between my final year of high school and college. I spent my time going to clubs like Xenon, Heartbreak, and the Mudd Club – where I saw Bowie for the first time –  and visiting galleries like Castelli, Annina Nosei, and FUN. Speaking of fun, my Eileen Ford model girlfriend and friends in the music industry were often sneaking me into the infamous Studio 54 meaning most nights out ended with a 5 or 6 a.m. walk through the gritty streets of the LES searching for hot breakfast.

During one of these foggy-brained walkabouts through Hell’s Kitchen, I happened upon an open garbage bag with some photo prints and slide boxes. Upon checking it out, I noticed a few slides and an 8”x10″ color photo of Andy Warhol. I thought, “well, that’s a good find.” The friend I was with was a little jealous, and I knew it just by the crude comment about my garbage foraging.

Finding the photograph reminded me that art is everywhere, even in the trash. I have been an art enthusiast for decades, both as a collector of architectural drawings, graffiti, and street art, and as a photographer and music video maker.

I have taken that image with me everywhere I’ve lived. From NYC to Mexico, San Diego, and Los Angeles, but I never really thought about the story behind the photo and where it might have originated – until recently.

The possibility of using the incredible power of the internet and blockchain technology to help identify the photo’s original photographer is a new journey for me. It seems the timing could not be better – with the reach and technology available today, and I am more hopeful than ever to solve the mystery. This is what life is all about – understanding the intrinsic value of connection and how we are all in this together.

The possibility of using the incredible power of the internet and blockchain technology to help identify the photo’s original photographer is a new journey for me.

TRiPTYCH is a crypto media incubator and culture accelerator. Up until now, this never-before-seen photograph of Andy Warhol has been kept from public view. What was destined to be trash forever, will find permanence and purpose on the blockchain. We’re using the power of the blockchain to amplify a 30-year search for the original photographer. We’ve tokenized a high-quality, digital rendering of the original work into one distinct NFT in an attempt to increase our chances of tracking down the photographer. As a first in the creative blockchain space, the unidentified artist has been written into the smart contract to receive royalties from the sales made here. Additionally, there is a finder’s fee included in the smart contract for the individual who helps us to answer this decades-long question of, “Who Shot Andy Warhol?” The 1-of-1 auction for this NFT will unlock the digital file. Should the current owner of the photograph feel compelled, the physical photograph may be gifted to the highest bidder.

Genies Asia x PAC-MAN x OpenSea

Thanks to the Genies Asia x PAC-MAN team for publishing this article with us!

What are Genies?

As the world’s premiere avatar technology company, Genies is on a mission to become the identity layer across the internet. Genies is creating a network of platforms and marketplaces where virtual identities lead the way in digital communication, connection, commercialization, and monetization. Genies recently released its beta app, which allows you to create your “starter” Genie, collect avatar wearables to evolve your look and style, and use it on Giphy’s network of platforms. As Genies rolls out of beta later this summer, you’ll be able to use your Genie on more and more platforms through their SDK/API integrations, which will provide you with more places to access your virtual identity and new ways to use it. Your Genie will travel with you wherever you go in the digital world, becoming the virtual portable identity across the internet and metaverse. Genies is preparing to launch their own avatar wearable NFT marketplace later this summer, built with Dapper Labs, the creators of NBA Top Shot and CryptoKitties. Once this is live, you’ll be able to buy, sell, and trade your favorite Genie avatar wearable NFTs from the most iconic celebrities and brands, allowing you to own a piece of culture and evolve your Genie identity over time.

Genies Asia partners with PAC-MAN to debut avatar wearable NFTs for the game’s 41st birthday celebration

In celebration of PAC-MAN’s 41st birthday, BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment has partnered with Genies Asia to bring iconic visuals from the game’s heritage into the new-age virtual world through a limited edition avatar wearable NFT drop. This collaboration marks the first partnership for Genies Asia in the region, as they bring PAC-MAN to a global audience through OpenSea’s marketplace. The collection merges the classic PAC-MAN look with new stylized takes from renowned artists in the digital space, including Baugasm, Cory Van Lew, Gabriel Gimenez, NFN Kalyan, Renderfruit, and Defaced Studio. The final piece of the collection features a 1/1 auction, memorializing PAC-MAN’s historic leap into the world of avatars.

“It’s amazing to be able to bring PAC-MAN into the digital world in this capacity where fans and collectors can engage with the game in a completely new way that is very personal to their own digital identity and self-expression – through their Genie,” said BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment CEO Yasuo Miyakawa. “We’re excited to also be partnering with the six digital artists in this collaboration as a way to re-imagine the PAC-MAN style and allow the artists to showcase their own unique experience and connection to the brand.”

Each of these NFT pieces unlock a limited-edition PAC-MAN avatar wearable – collectors of the helmets will be able to redeem the helmet for their own Genie avatar to wear, and the one of one will unlock an ultra-rare pair of PAC-MAN inspired Arcade Boots. Collectors of these pieces will be able to redeem their wearables to adorn on their Genie once the Genies avatar wearable NFT marketplace is live in the coming months. At that time, all owners of Genies NFTs will be able to transfer their NFT to the new marketplace, which will then unlock the affiliated wearable in their Genies App for their Genie avatar to wear. All future Genies avatar wearable NFT drops will be available solely on the Genies Marketplace. DAZN’s Face the Fearless: Highlights from Canelo’s Latest Knockout

Thanks to the DAZN team for publishing this article with us! If you’d like to write a guest post for our blog, fill out this form.

The First NFT Drop Tied to a World Championship Fight

Global sports streaming service DAZN teamed up with Canelo Alvarez, and Matchroom Boxing to launch the first NFT collection around a world championship boxing fight, complete with memorabilia from the fight and gamification. After dropping three collections before the fight, today DAZN released two ultra-rare Legendary Edition NFTs that showcase the best moments from last Saturday’s super middleweight clash between Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders.

This post-fight drop gives fans & collectors an opportunity to own the two defining moments of the fight:

  • How It Started: Canelo’s Ring Walk 1/1 (Legendary): complete with 8K camera footage, fireworks, and a mariachi band, Canelo’s confident entrance was a sign of things to come. Bid on this piece of history, commemorating the Cinco de Mayo fight and the electricity in the arena with a record crowd of 73,126 for an indoor boxing event in the US.
  • How it Ended: Canelo’s Uppercut 1/1 (Legendary): own the punch that broke Saunders’ orbital bone, shut his eye, and forced him to quit before the 9th round. This brutal right uppercut won the fight for Canelo and earned him another piece of the super middleweight title. This NFT comes with unlockable rewards: signed gloves & a personalized video from Canelo’s promoter, Eddie Hearn.

Both NFTs are live on auction now and will remain open until Saturday, May 15, at 10pm ET.

Canelo vs. Saunders Legendary Edition Knockout NFTs Sold Out On Fight Night

The Legendary Edition Knockout NFTs feature digital representations of each fighters’ gloves, complete with their digital signature and unique elements that showcase their own personal styles. These are two ultra-rate 1/1 NFTs, one for Canelo and one for Saunders, each coming with a once-in-a-lifetime package of rewards, including tickets to the fighter’s next fight, signed fight gloves, and a personalized video from either Canelo or Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn.

A New Experience for Collectors: Gamified NFTs with Unlockable Rewards

Many DAZN’s pre-fight collections included gamified elements that allowed fans to be part of the fight and try to acquire an entire collection of connected items.

Prediction NFTs asked fans to select the round they think the fight would end in or collect them all to own every round of the bout.

  • Prediction (Gold) – thirteen 1/1 Gold Edition NFTs for all 12 rounds and a judges’ decision, sold via auction. Since the fight ended with an 8th round TKO, the owner of the Round 8 NFT will receive two tickets to Canelo’s next fight.
  • Prediction (Bronze) – Bronze Editions sold at a fixed price. Owners of the 8th round will receive a free, year-long subscription to DAZN.

Tale of the Tape NFTs embody the traditional boxing tale of the tape poster, showcasing how each fighter stacks up on paper before he made his way to the ring.

  • Tale of the Tape – Canelo (Gold) – a 1/1 NFT sold at auction that showcases Canelo’s dominance and comes with signed gloves from the pound-for-pound king himself and a free, year-long subscription to DAZN.
  • Tale of the Tape – Saunders (Gold) – Despite Billy Joe’s loss, the owner of this 1/1 NFT will now receive signed gloves from Eddie Hearn and a free, year-long subscription to DAZN.
  • Tale of the Tape – Canelo or Saunders (Silver) – the Silver Edition allowed fans to choose their favorite fighter. Now, all owners of the Canelo NFTs will receive free, year-long subscriptions to DAZN and one owner will also receive a personalized video from Canelo.

The Lost Art Of Photography

Thanks to Gary Andrew Gershoff and his team for publishing this article with us! If you’d like to write a guest post for our blog, fill out this form.

When I began to shoot live concerts in late 1977, I was twenty five years old. I was passionate about both music and photography, and combining the two was a dream come true. As a musician, I could anticipate key musical points in songs to better capture the genuine expressiveness of the artist.

Photography back then was nothing like it is today. Everyone has smartphone cameras at their disposal, with tons of advanced features that take the work and stress out of taking the photo. The smartphones and digital cameras of today can take hundreds of photos per minute with automated settings to adjust for brightness, movement, focus, and more.

Back then, in the late 1970s and into the 1990s, I was shooting with film cameras. All photography was done manually. The pressure was immense. Timing the shot was everything, it was hard to get a good shot of the artists as they moved and danced on stage. There was no auto anything back then. You had to be quick, agile, and mentally sharp, constantly evaluating every second. You had to determine the color temperature of the stage lights and adjust your settings accordingly. Then there was the constant fluctuation of the lights. Most critical of all, you had to think, am I even in focus? You couldn’t see any of your shots in real time. Imagine the anxiety of not knowing if your settings were correct until the end of the night, when it was too late to capture the moment. You were flying by the seat of your pants.

On top of all the variables that go into getting the shot, you had to make it through a second hurdle: developing the black & white film, which is an artform in and of itself; the expertise to mix the processing chemicals at the proper temperature and ratio. Any miscalculations could under, or over process the film, lessening your chances of a good photo coming out.

I am very proud of the images I have produced, and am happy to know that people who love and appreciate these artists will have a visual history for years to come.

Check out the collection.

Save Thousands Of Lives Through This NFT

Thanks to the Noora Health team for publishing this article with us! If you’d like to write a guest post for our blog, fill out this form.

Noora Health, a public health nonprofit organization, is auctioning an NFT to support their work with underserved communities in South Asia.

Noora Health trains patients’ families to take care of them after they leave the hospital. By empowering caregivers with the knowledge and skills they need to care for their loved ones, Noora’s program reduces preventable complications, readmissions, and even death.

Noora Health is selling its first NFT titled ‘Save Thousands of Lives’, with the goal of raising funds to support their work. It is called this because they will use the proceeds from the sale of the NFT to save lives. They estimate that with each $1,235 raised by selling it, they can save one life (and improve several more). That means that the higher the price of this NFT goes, the more lives they will be able to save.

Their program runs in 165 hospitals in South Asia, serving primarily new mothers and their families, and has reached more than 1 million patients and families to date. During and beyond the COVID-19 crisis, women in India continue having babies, but with enormous challenges. Data they’ve collected since 2018 indicates that they can save 9 babies per 1000 live births, at this cost.

This NFT is different in that it is not tied to a digital file or work of art. What the final bidder will own, in this case, is the knowledge that the money they spent to buy it saved lives, and proof that they were the one who paid for this project. Noora Health imagines this NFT as something that can be handed down through generations or gifted to a loved one. The auction announcement generated some buzz online, with Paul Graham writing an essay about it and placing the initial bid.

Noora Health stresses that they could never put a price on a life, nor is this an attempt to; but that by being precise about the costs of their work, they’re highlighting the potential impact one can have by donating to efforts of this type. Besides fundraising for its own work, Noora Health hopes to start a conversation about new approaches to fundraising through its NFT auction – something that other organizations can tap into to reach potential supporters who otherwise might not have heard about them.
