DMA Design and Rockstar Games stunned the video gaming world with the 2001 release of GRAND THEFT AUTO III, a ground-breaking, third-person free roam criminal drama that quickly became one of the most influential titles of the sixth generation of video games, as well as a landmark for the open world format.

Following it up would be no small feat, but with the release of GRAND THEFT AUTO: VICE CITY a year later, gamers were treated to a title bigger in scale, story and ambition, with a unique tone and feel.

Shifting from the New York-aping Liberty City to the titular Miami stand in, the open world sequel brought sharper writing, smoother combat, and a nearly twice-as-large map, supplemented by a story that drew heavily from Brian DePalma’s SCARFACE.

At the heart of said story was Tommy Vercetti, a recently released mobster – voiced with gusto by the late, great Ray Liotta – looking to make his mark in GTA’s version of the Sunshine State.

VICE CITY sold more than 500,000 copies within its first day of release, going on to sell more than 17.5 million copies over the next six years, according to publisher Take 2.

Rockstar would continue to think bigger and aim higher with the release of 2004’s GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS and subsequent next-gen titles GTA IV and GTA V. But VICE CITY holds a special place in the hearts of franchise fans, enamoured with its near-perfect blend of period satire, chic aesthetic and rampant carnage.
