Digital animation with sound 134MB. MOV file, 1723 x 1970
Included in the Nightclubbing NFT collection: Infems collaboration with Carolina Herrera.
Against a background that enacts the colours of a night sky slowly brightening to daybreak and the sounds of a city, words emerge. Two Carolina Herrera evening dresses – one black, its silk skirts studded with pearls and mirrored petals; one fuchsia tulle – inspired this vignette of an encounter between strangers during one of the hottest New York Augusts on record. As well as representing the poles of midnight and morning, these colours are symbolic. If black is the timeless and unknowable future, pink is a blend of femme fatale red with virginal white and speaks to nostalgia, to a world seen through ‘rose-tinted glasses.’
Fusing several autobiographical memories from the now mythical summer of 2001, a time when celebrities queued for the ultra-fashionable bar of the relaunched Hudson Hotel and Brooklyn’s Water street still hosted artists’ studios, InFems artist Marie-Anne Mancio’s ‘Chameleon’ is a celebration of being thirty-something and without responsibilities. If her version of New York has disappeared forever, others have taken its place as the city thrives by re-inventing itself, just as a woman is the ultimate chameleon.
Exclusive unlockable content available.
In honor of International Women’s Day, the House of Herrera has joined forces with InFems (Intersectional Feminist Art Collective), to create the Nightclubbing NFT collection: Five works of art exploring themes of mythology, self-love, identity, and representation, by five trailblazing female artists.
100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Fundación Ared, a charitable organization that seeks to empower disenfranchised women through access to training and higher education.
Having trained as an artist in interdisciplinary practice before gaining a DPhil from Sussex University and a subsequent MPhil in Creative Writing from the University of Glasgow, Marie-Anne’s piece titled, Chameleon consists of an animated poem with sound, written exclusively for Carolina Herrera. The unlockable content features an unseen video of the author revealing the true story behind the handwritten version of the poem.
