Claude Monet is often considered to be the founder of Impressionist painting. He was fascinated by the countryside and after being introduced to plein air painting by Boudin, he worked on several outdoor landscapes. He was known to paint the same scene several times in order to capture the play of light and effect of seasons on a subject.

Impressionism as a style developed in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The name derives from a satirical review of Claude Monet’s work ‘Impression’ by critic Louis Leroy. The movement is best known for rendering reality by employing the transitional properties of light and color. As with most art movements, the early practitioners were considered rebels and radicals, who moved away from an emphasis on lines, contours, and figures in favor of free brush strokes. Many artists even painted outdoors to achieve more realistic depictions of life. Still lifes and landscapes took precedence over religious and mythological work.
