Diplômée de l’ENSBA de Lyon et titulaire d’un M2 en arts plastiques à Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Sylviane Masson vit et travaille à Paris. Son travail artistique a été présenté dans de nombreuses manifestations artistiques, notamment au Salon de Montrouge, à Jeune Création (où elle a été membre active pendant 5 ans) et au Centre d’art contemporain Chanot, et a fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions personnelles, en particulier à la Cité internationale universitaire de Paris (obtenant l’aide individuelle au projet de la Mairie de Paris). De plus, elle réalise des performances au sein d’un collectif d’artistes et chercheur·e·s, le Laboratoire de la contre-performance.

Dans un contexte actuel marqué par la présence toujours plus grande des technologies numériques, Sylviane Masson reproduit laborieusement, par des outils traditionnels de dessin, et souvent un ton en dessous, des images dont la fonction est d’usage et dont les qualités sont tout au plus communicationnelles : packshots, fonds d’écran, icônes d’application, billets de banque, timbres-poste. Ce travail lent de reprise nourrit le fantasme d’arrêter le flux des images.

Ses travaux récents témoignent d’une pratique antérieure de la photographie. En effet, les référents empruntés sur le net restent photographiques et les opérations de cadrage et de coupe citent par ailleurs ce médium. Sylviane Masson dessine pour ainsi dire avec un regard de photographe, informée des nouvelles technologies et de ses manipulations (copier-coller, couper-coller…).

Par de légères interventions, comme un recadrage ou la fragmentation du support, elle altère l’image et révèle ainsi son caractère précaire. L’image clinquante laisse place à sa forme résiduelle. Sur un mode mineur, dans une perspective low-tech, elle déjoue une vision commerciale d’un monde en représentation et fragilise les images voulues performantes. En isolant ces objets du consumérisme, elle archive en quelque sorte leur obsolescence.

Her recent work bears witness to a previous practice of photography. Indeed, the references borrowed from the net remain photographic and the framing and cutting operations also cite this medium. Sylviane Masson draws, so to speak, with a photographer's gaze, informed about new technologies and its manipulations (copy-paste, cut-paste, etc.).

Through slight interventions, such as cropping or fragmenting the medium, it alters the image and thus reveals its precarious nature. The flashy image gives way to its residual form. On a minor note, from a low-tech perspective, it thwarts a commercial vision of a world in representation and weakens the images that are intended to perform. By isolating these objects from consumerism, it archives in a way their obsolescence.
