Doors of No Return collection image

The Doors of No Return Collection is a digital reimagination of the terror of lost paradise in the common cultural memory and experience of Africans snatched from their world through the fortified doors of European military installations along the West African coast and into an Atlantic world of enslavement and pain.

The collection is an interpretation of the a collection of tapestry works of the same title by renowned, multi-disciplinary artist Martin Grizzell. As a textile artist, Grizzell's works have been featured in Time Magazine and exhibited in galleries and sacred spaces throughout the U.S. and France. Two of his works are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and he is a featured designer in the book, Blacks in the History of Fashion (2022).
