The Peepul Tree or Bodhi Tree is a variety of fig plant native to the Indian Subcontinent. The sacred fig is considered to have a religious significance in three major religions that originated on the Indian subcontinent, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It is believed Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment meditating under a Peepal Tree, Sadhus (Hindu ascetics) still meditate beneath sacred fig trees.
