I have really been enjoying the repetition in these patterns and learning how to read and interpret them. This piece is titled, 'When the Storms Come," to share the reality that life isn't always easy and that I myself feel pressure and difficulties as I move, grow and transform on this journey. It is a prayer for me and for everyone who feels the storms, the lightening etc. It is a prayer for us to remember we will make it through.
I started painting "Medicine Paintings," when I found out that my ancestors painted their faces to share a dream, manifest a hope, pray for healing or to celebrate a significant life event. The paintings in this collection do the same thing except in the digital world. Each painting is created using the iconography of my people the Nlaka’pamux, they include ancestral understandings of color and design. Starting today March 14, 2022 I will release a new "Medicine Painting," everyday for the next 1000 days, increasing the price of each painting incrementally depending on gas fees. I am making this commitment to working with my ancestral visual language on a daily basis so I can familiarize myself with each symbol and motif and share that journey with my friends, family, followers and community. I have been developing a visual dictionary for my community and will be using 50% of the profits from this NFT project to print the dictionary for reserve schools and community members.
