The middles motif in this artwork stands for many things, all having to do with carrying a burden or harvesting food, like fish or deer. This artwork shares the reality that it is through work that we make things beautiful. And even when we use things for work it is ok to beautify them with rows of beads or decorative motifs.
I started painting "Medicine Paintings," when I found out that my ancestors painted their faces to share a dream, manifest a hope, pray for healing or to celebrate a significant life event. The paintings in this collection do the same thing except in the digital world. Each painting is created using the iconography of my people the Nlaka’pamux, they include ancestral understandings of color and design. Starting today March 14, 2022 I will release a new "Medicine Painting," everyday for the next 1000 days, increasing the price of each painting incrementally depending on gas fees. I am making this commitment to working with my ancestral visual language on a daily basis so I can familiarize myself with each symbol and motif and share that journey with my friends, family, followers and community. I have been developing a visual dictionary for my community and will be using 50% of the profits from this NFT project to print the dictionary for reserve schools and community members.
