The original Gold Mark appeared in 2001 to mark the changeover from the German Deutschmark to the Euro currency. It was issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The 1 DM gold coin is made of 12 grams of 999.9 fine gold.
The motif is like the standard 1 Mark coin with the federal eagle and oak leaves and was minted in a mintage of 1 million by five German mints. The minting was done in equal proportions per mint (200,000 pieces each).
