„Corona Rose 1 “, 600 cm x 240 cm is the first of a series of Corona Roses (size of lace assemblage: 440 cm x 185 cm) recycled old handmade lace and doilies gathered from all over the world and secured on a transparent gray net, 2020.

My „Corona Rose 1 “ is a large scale assemblage created from handmade laces and the result of my ongoing project of collecting laces from all over the world and giving them a new life in the form of collective art assemblages alluding to contemporary tapestries.

„Corona Rose 1“ is my response and foreshadowing of the first lockdown of the Corona Virus wave.

„Blooming“ now since October 2020  in the prominent St. Steven‘s Cathedral in Vienna, it functions as a symbol of hope to overcome the ongoing pandemic. „Just as a rose has its thorns which it overcomes with its beauty, also we will overcome the hardships of the Corona pandemic.“ It will remain on view in the St. Stephansdom Cathedral till Sept. 2023.

Furthermore, „Corona Rose 1“is also a socially engaged project, being the outcome of my collaboration with the village of Idrija. New lace rose petals and leaves were specifically created for this art work by a group of elderly lace makers from the region of Idrija  as an action to „stay home and protect oneself and others“ from the pandemics. As such, „ Corona Rose 1“ has become and continues to be a symbol of hope and realization of how we are more connected then we may appear to be upon first sight with both one another as a people as well as in general with nature itself.
