022.Kegon Falls/Tochigi

Located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, Kegon Falls is one of the three most famous waterfalls in Japan, and is said to have been discovered 1,200 years ago by Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko. There is a theory that the name "Kegon" was taken from the name of a nearby temple called Kegonji, and another theory that it was named after the Kegon Sutra, one of the Buddhist scriptures. The Kegon waterfall is made up of water from Lake Chuzenji falling in one fell swoop from a height of 97 meters, with an average of about 3 tons of water flowing down per second. The Kegon Waterfall Elevator, which opened in 1930, takes you all the way down through the rocks to the waterfall viewing platform in front of the falls. The waterfall basin seen from the viewing platform is very impressive. It was designated as a national scenic beauty in 1931 and was selected as one of the top 100 geological sites in Japan in 2007.
