Centro Habana 22.01.2014 - Sitting on the couch, H. scrolls through the hundreds of folders neatly organized on his computer desktop. It’s time for some music videos. He asks me whether I know the one he is about to show us. I shake my head. I must admit I’m not very updated about music. “But you surely know this one?” No, not even this one. How is it possible that I, used to having access to internet everyday, don’t know these things? On the other side I ask myself how it is possible that they are so updated since I spontaneously made the naïve connection between the lack of internet and the lack of information. The explanation is simple but not obvious: much of what people know about todays news – especially the youth – passes through USB sticks. Some have the chance to travel and import from abroad, others, who have internet access, download what they possibly can. Then the information is passed from hand to hand, from friend to friend. H. points out: only quality stuff! USB and computer memory is limited – and hard disks are very expensive. You cannot afford the superfluous.
