Imprimatura by Claire Silver
The initial layer of paint that smooths and grounds a painting for building subsequent layers upon. The bedrock by which hidden magic is revealed. If a light imprimatura is used over a dark surface, reflecting light will cause a luminous effect. If a dark imprimatura is used over a light surface, colors will be deep, rich, and complex. Imprimatura or Grisaille are often the first step in the intricate, time consuming, and many-layered paintings made with Velatura, Sfumato, and/or glazing techniques.
This piece was created by hand-sketching in digital charcoal, layering and smoothing with Artificial Intelligence (Neural Filters), mixing in Public Domain master painting (still life) for texture, and digitally hand-painting/manipulating for cohesion. Its process and aesthetic are intentionally similar to the artist's earliest work, before they discovered NFTs, and before they began to share their inner world with anyone. The sketch lines are visible.
It is the first layer in a journey that mirrors the artist's life.
Velatura is a method of indirect painting performed by applying numerous layers of semi-opaque to semi-translucent paint to a work of art in stages, letting each dry completely before adding another. As the layers all possess some level of transparency, light passes through the paint, hitting the canvas and reflecting back toward the viewer. This creates an otherworldly, glowing, living effect that is inimitable by any other means. The nature of the technique requires a tremendous amount of time--the more glazes, the more rich and beautiful the effect--and is very unforgiving of mistakes. The artist that dedicates to this slow, careful, path--to return, again and again, layer after layer, week after week--will bring a rare and singular beauty into the world.
