To be a veteran is to put your life on the line for your country. Not just your actual life but your life-trajectory. Living in Los Angeles, you see many Vets living on the streets, but most gut-wrenching of all is to witness the vets who are homeless living next to the cemetery, as if to commune with their fallen brethren beyond the grave, or to prepare themselves for their own fateful demise. As someone who has lost many family members to wars, I can’t fathom what that would be like or how that would have affected me, but I imagine that as long as we remember their names, they’ll never be forgotten. Unfortunately for me many family members names and bodies were lost in the horrors. I imagine what it would be like to commune with these lost souls. On this Memorial Day, let us remember the fallen, and never forget.
