The Adventures of Andy Warhol and the Amiga 1.0
“I want to be a machine” Andy Warhol
“Before I was shot, I always thought that I was more half-there than all-there - I always suspected that I was watching TV instead of living life. Right when I was being shot and ever since, I knew that I was watching television.” Andy Warhol
This is a remix of Andy Warhol’s ‘Untitled (Self-Portrait)'

Andy Warhol: Machine Made The sale of five of Andy Warhol’s works as non-fungible tokens is now open for bids at Christie’s [1]. These works were created with an Amiga 1000 that were used as part of the launch event for this Amiga computer in 1985 [2] and recovered in 2014 [3].
I became fascinated by this art and the deeper story behind it following the tweet from Golan Levin [4] explaining that Christie’s is not offering the original Warhol’s for sale but rather ‘…altered, 2nd-generation near-copies’ The original are 320 x 200 resolution and the Christie’s sale are at 6000 x 4500. It’s an interesting story given that a 6000 x 4500 image could not fit on a 1.4MB floppy disk or even on the Amiga 1000’s 512kb ram [5].
Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts is offering this sale in partnership with Christie’s - somewhat missing the point on one of the great advantages of cryptoart / NFTs - you can avoid galleries and auction houses and the commission they take from the sale.
The proceeds will be used by the Andy Warhol Foundation’s grant making initiatives including funding of The Andy Warhol Museum and support for other artists [6]. The proceeds from this sale will also be used to offset carbon emissions used in the minting process. This demonstrates a lack of understanding of NFTs and the Ethereum blockchain as Ethereum blocks continue to confirm whether the blocks are full or empty. New technology aside, transferring an NFT on the Ethereum network is likely to produce a lot less carbon emissions than shipping art.
Bids close 27 May 2021
