Studio study is a composite animation showing an imaginary shelving unit filled with digital artworks, objects, and electronics, rendered in black and white pixel patterns and isometric perspective. The animation was created in the fall of 2023 and portrays a self-contained workspace as a metaphor of various aspirations and influences at play in my practice. Studio study operates within a tradition of artists representing their studio spaces - at times realistically and at other times allegorically – as a form of self-portraiture and to evoke parts of their creative process. The animation expands on this artistic genre by rendering a personal collection of real and fictional objects as a multitude of inspirations drifting endlessly in cosmic space. Early videogame systems, VHS tapes and books are found next to imaginary hardware, all together infused with subtle motions, charging the scene with electric energy. Studio study is also informed by a broader history of representation of architectures and objects using isometric perspective - for both historical recordings and subjective narratives - such as the works of 18th century Italian artist, architect, and archaeologist Giovanni Battista Piranesi.
Studio Study is an edition of 20. Each edition includes a 24 x 24 inches signed archival print on acid-free paper. Each print contains an AR layer accessible through the Artivive App. Artwork information: digital animation (GIF, mp4), 1080x1080 (2160x2160) pixels, 560 frames, 25 frames per second, Black & White, 2023.
Nicolas Sassoon is a Franco-Canadian artist using early computer graphics to create a wide array of pixelated forms & figures, moiré patterns & architectural structures. This focus on early computer graphics is driven by the sculptural, material and pictorial qualities of this imagery, as well as its limitations and its poetics.
