'To allow scientists to gather data from remote places, as we can’t be there just taking samples every day in these places, we deploy scientific instrumentation, in this case, oceanographic sensors that measure different water parameters. We can trust its data. This sensor is actually a small laboratory that runs a specific protocol to take little water samples. The sensor measures the reaction of the PH and calculates the partial pressure of CO2 in the water. CO2 is one of the anthropogenic impacts of industrialization. It’s a gas whose concentration has been changing significantly in the atmosphere, especially in the last 100 years. When this gas mixes with the ocean, it acidifies the water in a process called ocean acidification. This process impacts essential things, like calcium carbonate in the water, which is the mineral that mussels and fishes need to build their bone structures. We also have an oxygen sensor to measure more biological parameters because oxygen is relevant to primary production driven by photosynthesis.'

BEHOLD THE OCEAN

All pieces are available on https://beholdtheocean.com/

PATAGONIA HAS THE THIRD LARGEST ICE RESERVES IN THE WORLD. THIS ECOSYSTEM IS BEING DISRUPTED: OCEAN ACIDIFICATION, GLOBAL WARMING, RETREATING GLACIERS. I PRODUCED BEHOLD THE OCEAN IN CHILE IN DECEMBER 2020, DURING THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC WHEN GOVERNMENTAL MEASUREMENTS SEVERELY AFFECTED ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH. THE PROJECT DOCUMENTS A SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION TO THE SOUTHERNMOST OF PATAGONIA IN GLOBALLY TURBULENT TIMES AND MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE DURING THAT PERIOD.

I AM USING THE WORK TO MAP OUR RAPIDLY CHANGING NATURE TO THE BLOCKCHAIN AS AN ACT OF FUTURE-PROOF PRESERVATION. WITH THE PROCEEDS, FRIEND AND MARINE BIOLOGIST MAX VERGARA AND I PUT TOGETHER AND FUND A SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION TO CAPE HORN IN 2022. WHEN WE RETURN, WE’LL PUBLISH THE ENVIRONMENTAL DATA ON-CHAIN.
