This is the 15th installment of the "Let's Travel Japan with Paintings" series. This time, the setting is Chikugo Province. In pictorial reality, this area includes the cities of Kurume, Tosu, Chikugo, Yame, Yanagawa, and Saga. The area is characterized by the Chikushi Plain, the largest plain in Kyushu. However, for a plain with the largest market in Kyushu, urban development is not as advanced as in the Fukuoka Plain. The rivers depicted are, from the front, the Chikugo River (Houman River and Johara River) and the Yabe River. The Chikugo River in particular is known as a raging river. The castles depicted are, counterclockwise from the front, Kurume Castle, Saga Castle, and Yanagawa Castle. The sea depicted is the Ariake Sea. The roads depicted are National Routes 3 and 34. The volcanic island-like object in the background is Mount Unzen in Nagasaki. Incidentally, it is a peninsula.
