Two beautiful young unmarried Swazi girls perform in lovely unison a traditional dance called "Ummiso" pronounced as oo-me-so.
Ummiso is only danced eMalhengeni the ceremony and the name is self explanatory because there is a lot of standing that takes place. They stand in their numbers in that semi circle way, then move from that circle to dance one by one’s self confidence. Only maidens engage in this dance.
Sinenkosi Msomi, 2021
The collection was inspired by the need to echo the beauty of our Swazi culture and the significance of the role played by young Swazi women in ensuring that our culture and traditions are well kept and relayed effectively to following generations.
The series focuses on the Imbali (young girls) traditional regalia (ema hiya) as seen in the images and dances such as Ingadla and Ummiso as well as their purity.
I also shifted focus towards the traditional neckpiece called Emagcebesha that compliment the beauty of the traditional garments and I show the Emafahlawane which are used for dance.
