The myth proposed by Cancelliere does not follow the usual philological reading. In the painting, the nymph Daphne does not have the luxuriant appearance of laurel. What stands in the foreground in the canvas is a black tree, apparently dead, symbol of the drama experienced by the nymph fleeing from Apollo. While Daphne's pain unfolds in front of our eyes, the gesture of a naive little dog dampens the scope of the drama, with two or three drops of irony. Attention. Paolo Cancelliere is not a painter suitable for the faint of heart. In his works, myth, religion and history are torn from their context and projected into a dark world, a parallel dimension in which desolation and anguish reign. Thus for Cancelliere this timeless world, similar to the limbo of the Shinigami, the Japanese Death Gods, becomes a reality in which to free one's inner monsters and observe them. Through his painting as a damned artist he exorcises these demons, he tells us about them, sometimes with a touch of irony, to try to understand them together with us and help us defeat ours.
