This is Bill’s.

You have all heard the story of Bill Gatekeeper, a bird who became famous for inventing a new kind of window. But, until now, you probably haven't heard the story of his hat, who was named Mel.

Bill first met Mel when he was a young bird, just starting out in the business world. Mel was the most beautiful hat Bill had ever seen.

"That hat looks just like a police helmet from Great Britain in the 1930s or thereabouts," thought Bill. "I simply must have it!"

So, he asked the hat-maker if he could buy the hat from him.

"Oh, no," said the hat-maker, whose name is not important to this story. "I couldn't possibly sell you my hat. It's been in my family for generations."

But, after much persistence from Bill, the hat-maker finally agreed to sell him the hat for a very high price.

Bill put the hat on, and nothing happened, except that passers-by began to mistake him for a British police constable, circa 1930.

But, Bill didn't care. He was happy to have the hat, and he thought it made him look quite dashing.

One day, while Bill was sitting in his office, working on a new invention, he had an idea. "Why not make a window that opens and closes like a door?" he thought.

He got to work immediately, and within a few weeks, he had invented the first prototype of his now-famous windows.

But, there was one problem: the window was too heavy to lift. It would need some kind of mechanism to open and close it.

Bill thought and thought, but he couldn't come up with a solution. He was about to give up when he had an idea. "I'll ask my hat Mel!" he thought.

He took off his hat and looked at it. "Mel, I need your help," he said. "I've invented a new kind of window, but I can't figure out how to make it open and close."

The hat said nothing, because it was just a hat, and hats cannot think or talk. But because of the hat's shape, Bill could hear his own thoughts echoing around inside its roomy and spacious dome once he put it back on. "That's easy!" Mel seemed to say. "Just put a handle on one side, and a hinge on the other, and you're done!"

Bill was so pleased with the idea that he immediately implemented it. And, that is how Bill Gatekeeper invented a window that was also a gate.

Some people say that Bill's success is due to his hat. They say that the hat gives him good luck. But, of course, that is just a superstition. The real reason for Bill's success is hard work, talent, a bit of luck, and a near-monopoly over window manufacture all over the world.
