This is Larry’s.

Once, there was a bird called Larry Aliceson, who loved skiing, and longed to be able to tell the future. He tried every method he could think of, from reading tea leaves to sitting in a dark room and gazing into a crystal ball, but nothing worked. Larry was about to give up hope when he met a friendly cat who told him that he could become an Oracle if he wore a special hat, which was a striking red beanie with a beautiful blue pom-pom.

Larry was sceptical at first, but he decided to give it a try. He took the hat and put it on, and immediately he could see into the future. "Hello!" said the hat. "My name is Sam."

"You have become an Oracle," said the cat, and it bounded away.

Larry was so excited that he started telling everyone what he saw, and soon word spread about the bird who could tell the future. Birds from all over the world came to hear his predictions. They surrounded Larry's house and demanded that he tell them the future.

Larry was so scared that he agreed to do as they asked. He put on his hat and started telling them what he saw, but the birds didn't believe him.

"You're just making this up!" they said. "You can't really see the future."

"Yes I can," said Larry. "Look, it will rain at some point in the future."

And right then there was a boom of thunder and it began to rain.

The birds were so impressed that they all decided to put on hats, and soon they could all see into the future too. They saw the terrifying futility of existence, and knew that they had to take action to prevent it from happening. They formed a committee to discuss the matter, and after hours of deliberation they came up with a plan.

Then the cat, whose name was Bob, set off the bombs he had planted. The birds had not seen it coming! They had all been tricked. The cat laughed as he watched them die, knowing that he had won.

"Silly birds," Bob chuckled. "They should know that only cats can really see the future."

From afar, Larry watched from a mountain-top, wearing his slightly-singed hat, Sam. He had used his skiing skills to escape, and he knew that he would never trust a cat again. The birds had been foolish, but he had learned his lesson. If you want to know the future, you have to rely on yourself.

But even so, every now and then he would talk to Sam, just to see if maybe, by some miracle, the cat was right and Larry could really see into the future.

But Sam said nothing at all.
