The Wodaabe societies of Niger view the town where I met this striking young man - Bororo - as the heartland of their people. It took me a lot of difficult travel on overloaded jeeps through arid landscapes to get to this almost mythical place. In the time that we had together he appeared intensely proud of his culture, with the traditions of the Wodaabe - including facial tattoos and the use of the talisman that hangs from his neck - prominently on show.

These pictures are the result of hundreds of hours spent walking, hitching, and driving across Sub-Saharan Africa. They are a testimony to the vibrant cultures that still exist within some of the most isolated lands on earth.
I had nothing but sunshine and a hut available as a great ‘open studio': so I used these parameters and started experimenting. The technique is simply the illumination of natural sunlight reaching into the darkness of huts and lighting up these remarkable people.
