This 162 frame rotoscope animation started off as an 80 frame exploration into something I had wanted to do for years, and ended up doubling in size and being the catalyst for a new series of art, culminating in my High Line art show at Thalia Surf in Laguna Beach on July 7th 2022. I referenced a sequence of surfer Ryan Burch, from footage by Ryan Thomas, to create the animation. I chose this sequence because of the effortless style with which the surfer explores the full expanse of the wave. This is just about as well as a fish surfboard can be surfed. For the art show I took frames from the animation and created physical mixed media art pieces on wood panels.
