What is it to be assigned female at birth, socialized female, have a beard, notable strength, take up space, be a lover to all genders, a mentor to young queers, to break the bounds of the binary “male” and “female”? As a non-binary human, my sheer existence makes people uncomfortable. Fear - a common reaction to what we don’t understand. Is it a curse or a superpower? Sometimes it feels like the burden of my true self is too much to bear. However, when given the space to stretch my wings and show my colors, true rainbows of empowerment appear and captivate expansive thought. A prism - a spectrum - of colors, flavors, shapes and sizes dance across the mind and twinkle like refracted light on the walls of the box you’ve been living in. This GIF invites the viewer to dive deep into the social construct of gender and carry on to a safe place where the confines built around you are examined and, when necessary, taken down, reconstructed, or left open to breathe and let the light shine through.
