We are responsible for everything in our minds, even if it seems to be external to us. This can be a difficult realization, and we may resist accepting responsibility for problems that seem to be "out there" until we start practicing taking responsibility for our own "in here" problems and seeing the benefits.
To begin taking responsibility for our thoughts and actions, it can be helpful to start with an issue that we already know we have caused for ourselves. This could be anything from being overweight, to struggling with substance abuse or anger management, to experiencing health problems.
To take responsibility, all we need to do is say "I'm sorry." However, it can be more powerful to express our remorse more clearly, such as by saying, "I realize that I am responsible for the (issue) in my life and I feel terrible remorse that something in my consciousness has caused this."
So choose something that you already know you’ve caused for yourself? Over-weight? Addicted to nicotine, alcohol or some other substance? Do you have anger issues? Health problems? Start there and say you’re sorry.
That’s the whole step: I’M SORRY. Although I think it is more powerful if you say it more clearly: “I realize that I am responsible for the (issue) in my life and I feel terrible remorse that something in my consciousness has caused this.”
