When you fall into yourself, there’s a comfort in knowing that you are the one who will be there to catch you. I like to think of it as a past or future self supporting me. It’s important to remind myself that I have my own back. Stepping into yourself takes trust, and for me it often feels more like I’m sinking into my own body. I imagine melting and being poured into a vessel; it doesn’t always feel familiar, but it feels like me.
This photograph honors all the becoming (and unbecoming) that brings us closer to ourselves each day.
[What makes you feel like you are becoming you?]
This collection is, all at once, a bucket of feelings, an offering, and a love letter for the tenderhearted. I’ve spent the past 2 years reconnecting to my body through dance, and one of the things I treasure the most is that dance gives what my heart needs in that moment—even if my mind or body doesn’t yet know what that is. Moving my body means having a conversation with myself; it means creating my own existence.
The movements in these photos were guided by these questions: How do I hold this world? How does this world hold me? I do not have the answers, but I do know that by reading them aloud, I feel my muscles softening and my heart opening up.
Each token in this collection has a prompt for you to consider or explore in whatever capacity feels good to you. I’d be honored if you shared your response with me via Twitter or IG @chiwiggly. (Ownership of a piece from the collection not required to respond!)
From a rainy day spent in a cabin in the mountains of Yuanli, Taiwan.
