Rolf Erik von Hoerschelmann was a German illustrator , collector , writer and bohemian . He received first drawing lessons from Susa Walter (1874-1945). Around the turn of the century, probably in 1903, he moved to Munich. As a passionate collector he hoarded there in his "Burrow" everything that had to do with paper and seemed culturally and historically interesting, but especially graphics . Despite limited financial resources put Hoerschelmann throughout his life to a considerable collection. For several years he worked as silhouettes - Schneider in the Schwabing shadow plays , which in 1907 by Alexander von Bernus had been established. As bibliophile , he was a member of the society of bibliophiles Munich (1908-1913) and the Society of Munich booklovers (1923-1931). " Throughout his life he made several study trips to Italy and France. There emerged watercolors with views of Paris, Provence, Rome, Umbria and Tuscany. In September 1934, he undertook with Hans Purrmann and Hugo Troendle a ride to the Corot exhibition in Zurich.

Hoerschelmann created as a writer, illustrator, cartoonist and graphic designer a versatile plant, Illustrations for about 40 books and magazines Simplicissimus, Youth and Flying leaves , numerous wood and paper cutouts, watercolors and bookplates and poster designs . His drawings featuring a brisk, impressionistic stroke. The hitherto neglected art form the silhouette got through Hoerschelmann a new significance in the book illustration.
