The visual for this piece is a drawing of a rose interspersed with lyrics from the song. The defiant and self sufficient nature of the lyrical and verbal content in the image juxtaposed against the romantic symbolism of a rose is ironic yet profound. A pop song, culturally speaking , is one of the more digestible forms of art. Pop music is the subtle background that subconsciously soundtracks our lives, playing when we go to the doctors office, grocery store, or any myriad of public places. It becomes familiar. The goal of this piece is to play into the pleasurable familiarity of pop music while challenging the listener and viewer to go one step deeper.
