This image was shot in Karijini National Park, Western Australia. I live in Western Australia. However, the shoot location is 15 hour’s drive from my front door. Therefore, this image took quite a bit of planning and time before it was realised. The campsite we stayed in was 80km’s from Spa Pool. As I’ve never been a fan of composite images and prefer to capture all the data on location at the same time, I knew that the perfect time to shoot would be at around 2.30am. This meant an early night and so I went to bed at 7pm. After 5.5 hours of below par sleep, I was up. Everything had already been prepared but even so the first thought in my head is always ‘Am I mad?’. The answers always yes and then I set off regardless. 80 km’s of dodging roo’s later and I arrived at the site. 3 torches, 4 layers of warm clothing, 2 camera’s, 3 lenses, 2 tripods, remotes, tea, food, first aid kit, snake bite kit, batteries, cables etc etc – you don’t drive all that way at that time of night unprepared! Now it was shooting time – when I feel most alive. Test shots, checking my notes from my earlier daytime scout of the area the day before, finding compositions, treading carefully, and keeping an eye on a reddish glow to the sky to my North caused by a controlled burn. 2 hours later and I’m done, relaxing with a cup of tea under the glorious night sky. Was it worth it? Yes. This is my little creation. One that took a huge adventure to realise and that will live with me forever. Whilst most people sleep, there’s a select few who are very much awake…...

Our Milky Way collection image

Award winning Photographer, David Atkins (The Nocturnal Photographer), presents 12 minted images from the collection ‘Under the Milky Way’. Each image has a supply of 1 and is the only copy. Each image has been carefully selected for this collection and features beautiful and unique foreground compositions under the magnificent Milky Way core. Shot on location in various parts of Western Australia, David’s meticulous planning and creative inspiration combine to produce distinctive results of thought-provoking photography. Every image has resulted from new ideas of how to show off not only the incredible wonder of the milky way but also the magnificent landscapes we have on our planet. The challenges, the adventure and the feeling of peace and gratitude I feel when sitting under a sky of stars is, for me, unrivalled. Surprisingly few people have ever seen the Milky Way and so my main goal is to share and show off the diversity and wonder of what this world (and universe) has to offer.
