This 1-of-1 features Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939, with uncut film of the most complete recording of New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia's participation in the ceremony. Included are remarks from La Guardia about Gehrig.

The first-ever NFT of this speech, this is a bonus token in a collection that represents the first New York Sports Hall of Fame NFT offering. With this drop, the Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day Speech Collection expands beyond its core three 1-of-1 tokens.

Each of the four NFTs feature remarks delivered at the Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day event, recorded by the same source. The three other speakers — recently retired Yankees captain Lou Gehrig, Yankees legend Babe Ruth and Yankees manager Joe McCarthy — were inducted into the New York Sports Hall of Fame between 1989 and 1991.

In this NFT, Gehrig appears with La Guardia and emcee Sid Mercer speaks. Also shown on the field are New York Yankees and Washington Senators players and members of the Seventh Regiment Band. The Gehrig ceremonies were held before the second game of a Senators-Yankees doubleheader.

At the time, Gehrig was dying of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the rare and incurable disease that became known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

On October 11, 1939, La Guardia appointed Gehrig to a ten-year-term as a New York City parole commissioner. Gehrig died two years later at age 37.

At the ceremony, Gehrig delivered perhaps the most famous speech in sports history. A separate token in the collection features the longest single-source film recording of Gehrig's iconic address—the first-ever minted and purchased NFT with film of Gehrig's speech.

A New York City native, La Guardia served as a United States congressman from New York before he became mayor. Four days after he appointed Gehrig to the parole commissioner position, La Guardia hosted the formal dedication of a Queens airport redesigned for commercial flights. The airport is now named for La Guardia, who had proposed and rallied for a major commercial airport in the city.

In its treasured archives, the New York Sports Hall of Fame has rights to the film in this NFT and thousands of other historical pieces of content.
