I came here, like I do every week, for a meal and some sake. It’s been quiet lately with all the restrictions but that’s ok, I usually keep to myself anyways. But this night, in walked a short and stout man who looked like he had words ready to leap from his mouth the moment he sat next to me. He made sure to keep the sake flowing as he told story after story each time growing in grandeur. “Who was this imaginative, jovial man who had such a peculiar way os speech?” I thought to myself. “The past was won with arrows and bullets but the future has already been conquered with words” he cryptically said to me before the night was over, feeling he got the dose of inspiration he needed to go home and continue his writing . As our relationship grew over time I came to realize just who he was and that these nights of sake and lively conversation with strangers over the years would come to shape greatly his most epic work that was yet to be finished but would later become a future national literary classic.
Anyone who has spent the most minimal time in this country will instantly appreciate how Japan is a land of stark contrasts. For every push into the future there are remnants of the past seemingly at every turn. Skyscrapers are being built next to shrines and fancy Michelin star restaurants are surrounded by vintage izakaya drinking pubs. Japan, as the worlds most ageing society, has always had its eyes on the future but its feet firmly planted in its nostalgic past.
This contrast leads to a wealth of photographic opportunity. And as a photographer with a keen interest in deep culture I wouldn't want to be photographing anywhere else!
There's a story attached to every photo I show here. Mostly fictional, but also mostly from my own experiences in Japan over the years. In this series my aim was to capture and edit in a way that portrays modern day Japan but in a style that gives it a time-honoured classic feel.
