At Stanford University, I attended sessions called Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders, in which Silicon Valley celebrities would talk about their careers and promote themselves and their businesses. On one occasion, two came entrepreneurs that wanted to present themselves as so successful they were only focused on their "spiritual" life at Burning Man; in this work, I wanted to capture that they were hiding something while giving a sales pitch.
Inspired by the 2022 poem of the same name by Lil Diamond Smith. The artwork portrays deftly drawn characters and caricatures, surprising comical delights amid the backdrop of the hustle of New York life. Using a range of approaches from expressionism to psychotropic nightmare fantasy, this collection evokes the essential humanity, well hidden as it is, of their generally ambitious, disillusioned, desperate characters who are trying to survive in a city that becomes increasingly more demanding. The collection specialises particularly in revealing the illusions about advanced digital life―a museum attacked by drones, a financier stressed to the point of fury and the statue of liberty circled by drones.
