ABOUT THE WORK

This piece of art was inspired by a cartoon called Ducktales, which I used to watch when I was a kid. The main character was Scrooge McDuck, who was portrayed as a rich but greedy businessman that was always on the mission to find ways of making more money through his adventures. His favorite activity was to swim around in the money in his vault. This scene became very famous and is often used as an analogy for wealth in popular culture around the world.

During the pandemic, being on a lockdown, I had a lot of time to read, watch, think and analyze current life events, and wanted to illustrate the life of a current, successful businessmen who have a lot of resemblance and remind me of Scrooge. The thought of it brought back childhood memories, which were translated into my art, however, with a touch of a modern era.

I wanted to give it life and see what it looks like today. The money bin filled with crypto’s Bitcoin versus gold dollar coins. Scrooge is dressed in designer clothes. Wearing a Gucci hat, LV jacket, Rolex on his wrist enjoying his Ace of Spades during the pandemic. Playing poker. Car collection. You name it, he’s got it. The eye of providence is looking over him, which means many things and one of them is clear enough: rich are getting richer.
