When I was finishing my graduate degree in Japan 20 years ago I almost drowned in the ocean. But for this sasquatch-of-an-Australian-man who administered our program, I would have surely died. This work is one of 4 works I created in 2020 reminiscing that frightening day. One thing I remember distinctly was that I couldn't tell where the horizon line was which I tried to capture visually in these pieces. These works were inspired compositionally by the photography of Hiroshi Sugimoto.
