「“美しい”とは何か？」

生きるうえで、誰にでもある問いです。

コレクション【Culture & Pattern series】は「“美しい”とは何か？」という問いに、ひとつの答えを出した作品群です。

出した答えは「美しさを生み出そうとするものは美しい」ということです。

私も皆さまと同じくこの世界に産まれ落ち、見聞と思考を重ねてきました。

歴史を学び、古今東西の文化に触れて。旅する先々で独自の文化と文様を発見しました。

衣服にあしらわれた刺繍や装飾。キレイ！器や工芸品にほどこされた伝統文様。スゴイ！

土地土地の人の手で作られた物には、気の遠くなるような手しごとが見て取れます。

手しごとは時に、布の補強だったり、寒さをしのぐため工夫だったり。生きてくために「そうする必要があった」。

しかし、必要ではない“無駄”とも言える作業が多く含まれているのです。

なぜわざわざ必要でもない複雑な“文様”を施す必要があったのでしょうか。

贅や権力により“作らされた”という感情だけではありません。あきらかに創意・工夫による「喜び」や「楽しみ」が多く含まれています。時には「情熱」や「狂気」までも。

さまざまな文様にふれると、「より良くしたい」「綺麗にしたい」「表現したい」といった純粋な想いに包まれるかのようです。

人間という生き物にしか持ち得ない。そして原始から持ち続けている感情。

「食欲」「性欲」「睡眠欲」といった根源的な欲求と近いところにある「美しさへの欲求」。

純粋な「美しさへの欲求」が、複雑な「文様」という形となって表れる。

この「美しさを生み出そうとする行為」は美しいし、実際に「美しい」と感じるものを生み出します。人間の美への欲求が“美しさ”の源泉なのでしょう。

結論。「“美しい”とは何か？」という答えのない問いに、あえて答えよう。

「美しさを生み出そうとするものは美しい」と。

“美”に対するひとつの答えを示すと共に、人間文化を讃えるために【Culture & Pattern series】を描いています。

ただ単に世界の文化＆文様を描いているのではありません。美しさを生み出そうとする人間の営みを描く。
