8-bit cryptosilence series by composer dmitri kourliandski
file properties: wav / mono / 8 kHz / 8 bit
A series of 8-bit sound files with one-minute silence is an extension and addition of Dmitri Kourliandski’s project Cryptosilence, problematizing the phenomenon of silence in the digital age.
In 2021, Dmitri Kourliandski created a series of four audio files containing one minute of digital silence in various formats (wav mono/stereo, mp3 mono/stereo). This project, called Cryptosilence, became the basis of Kourliandski’s solo exhibition, held from September 6 to November 7, 2021 at the Stella Art Foundation Gallery in Moscow (https://en.safmuseum.org/exhibitions/kourliandski-cryptosilence.htm). Cryptosilence also became the starting point for the creation of a concert performance installation Silence for the Sound Up concert series, which was curated by Dmitri Kourliandski. The performance dedicated to the phenomenon of silence in music was performed 4 times at the Mayakovsky Theater in Moscow, October 12, 2021 (http://soundupprogramme.tilda.ws/).
Along with Cryptosilence, the projects Pianospace and Unsolvable acoustic cases were also presented both within the framework of the exhibition and performance installation. All these projects are available on the account https://opensea.io/cryptosoundart
pure silence exists only in digital space and it can have various bitrate.
cryptosilence - a groundbreaking conceptual project by dmitri kourliandski consisting of 4 sound files of 1 minute silence each with different bitrate (mp3 mono, mp3 stereo, wave mono, wave stereo). the work is a new step in the tradition of silent music. up to now the most famous silent work is 4'33'' by john cage. cage's project was a statement of an impossibility of silence. nowadays the digital space opens the way for the pure silence to exist. in kourliandski's cryptosilence it exists in various forms (bitrates).
